Artist Biography by Matt Collar
An
adept jazz pianist, Cyrus Chestnut balances his lithe technical skill
with a robust, soulful style that speaks to his deep gospel roots and
love of swinging hard bop. Having grown up playing in the church,
Chestnut learned early on how to infuse his swinging, classically
trained style with a warm gospel sound. It was a style he perfected in
the late '80s and early '90s as a sideman, backing legendary vocalists
Jon Hendricks and Betty Carter, as well as with instrumentalists like
Donald Harrison and Wynton Marsalis. As a leader of his own groups, he
has collaborated with well-respected rhythm section players including
Christian McBride, Carl Allen, Clarence Penn, Ron Carter, Lewis Nash,
and others. Often working in a trio, as on 2016's Natural Essence with
Buster Williams and Lenny White, or with guest artists as on 2001's Soul
Food, he displays his virtuosic skill and mastery of the jazz
tradition.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1963, Chestnut first
started playing piano at age three, and by age five was already
performing at the Mount Calvary Baptist Church, which he attended with
his parents. By age nine, he was studying classical piano in the prep
program at the Peabody Institute. All the while, he continued to develop
his gospel and jazz skills, and in 1981 enrolled at Boston's Berklee
College of Music, where he earned his degree in jazz composition and
arranging. While there, he earned the Eubie Blake Fellowship, the Quincy
Jones Scholarship, and the Oscar Peterson Scholarship. After
graduating, he found himself an in-demand sideman, working throughout
the late '80s and early '90s with a string of well-known performers
including Jon Hendricks, Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Donald
Harrison, and others. However, it was his early association with
vocalist Betty Carter, with whom he toured and recorded, appearing on
1992's It's Not About the Melody, that had a lasting influence on the
pianist. Purportedly, Carter encouraged Chestnut to push himself to be
more individualistic by taking chances and trying to surprise her.
As
a leader, Chestnut took his time to develop, and made his solo debut in
1992 with The Nutman Speaks and Nut. Recorded for Japan's Alfa Jazz
label, the albums showcased the pianist's trio with bassist Christian
McBride and drummer Carl Allen. A third trio effort with McBride and
Allen, Another Direction, followed on Evidence in 1993. Chestnut then
signed with Atlantic and issued 1994's Revelation with bassist
Christopher J. Tomas and drummer Clarence Penn. Several more highly
regarded Atlantic releases followed, including 1995's Earth Stories and
1998's Cyrus Chestnut, which featured guest spots from Joe Lovano, James
Carter, and Anita Baker. Also during this period, he appeared on
vocalist Madeleine Peyroux's Dreamland, and collaborated on projects
with other artists including Tim Warfield, Kathleen Battle, James
Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rodney Whitaker, and more. He also made his
acting debut, performing as a character based on Count Basie in
director Robert Altman's 1995 film Kansas City.
In 2000, Chestnut
delivered his first holiday-themed album, Charlie Brown Christmas,
which hit number three on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. He then
rounded out his Atlantic contract with 2001's all-original Soul Food, a
exuberant set featuring appearances by Marcus Printup, James Carter,
Gary Bartz, and others. He then moved to Warner Bros. for 2003's trio
effort You Are My Sunshine, with bassist Michael Hawkins and drummer
Neal Smith. He then expanded the same group to a quartet, adding
guitarist Russell Malone on 2006's Genuine Chestnut. A year later, he
applied his urbane jazz chops to the music of Elvis Presley on Cyrus
Plays Elvis, followed by 2008's modal jazz-leaning Black Nile on Japan's
M&I label. In 2013, he delivered the hard bop-infused Soul Brother
Cool, which featured trumpeter Freddie Hendrix. He then showcased his
trio on the 2014 concert album Midnight Melodies, recorded live at Smoke
in New York City. Also in 2014, he joined Jimmy Greene on the
saxophonist's poignant, Grammy-nominated album Beautiful Life.
Chestnut
then moved to HighNote, debuting for the label with the 2015 trio
effort A Million Colors in Your Mind, with bassist David Williams and
drummer Victor Lewis. For his second HighNote effort, 2016's Natural
Essence, the pianist was joined by the veteran rhythm section of bassist
Buster Williams and drummer Lenny White. Williams and White were also
on board for 2017's There's a Sweet Sweet Spirit, which also featured
vibraphonist Steve Nelson. Also that year, he paired with Charnett
Moffett on the bassist's Music from Our Soul. In 2018, Chestnut returned
with Kaleidoscope, a classical-influenced trio album featuring bassist
Eric Wheeler and drummer Chris Beck. Included on the album were jazz
reworkings of compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Claude Debussy,
Erik Satie, and more.

Biografía del artista por Matt Collar
Cyrus
Lovano, James Carter y Anita Baker.
el sello japonés M&I.
saxofonista, nominado al Grammy, Beautiful Life.

Cyrus Chestnut • Journeys
Review
by Ken Dryden
Cyrus Chestnut's approach to piano is a mix of his gospel roots, effortless swing, lively bop, and lyrical ballad playing. His formative years included a stint with Jon Hendricks and the demanding Betty Carter, although here, accompanied by bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Neal Smith, his session focuses on his original works -- aside from a playful romp through the standard "Lover." His breezy bop vehicle "Smitty's Joint" showcases each member of the trio in turn and is destined to be a perfect set opener. Smith switches to brushes for Chestnut's delicate jazz waltz "Eyes of Angel," a spacious number that shimmers. "Journeys" deceptively opens in a subdued manner, building from a soft ballad setting into an intense climax without ever losing its lyricism. "Goliath" combines various influences from Chestnut's background, incorporating a familiar classical theme and his church pianist roots in a meditative yet gently swinging setting. Cyrus Chestnut's journeys have taken him to many musical destinations, yet he remains a distinctive original pianist whose work has continued to grow.

Cyrus Chestnut • Natural Essence
Review
by Matt Collar
As with his previous effort, 2015's A Million Colors in Your Mind, pianist Cyrus Chestnut's second Highnote release, 2016's Natural Essence, finds him communing with two veteran artists for a deeply heartfelt and swinging session. Whereas last time Chestnut was joined by bassist David Williams and drummer Victor Lewis, here he has conscripted the talents of bassist Buster Williams and drummer Lenny White. Both Williams and White are industry icons with decades of playing experience and credits with such luminaries as Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, Woody Shaw, Tony Williams, McCoy Tyner, and many others. While many of Chestnut's recordings lean toward the strait-laced and straight-ahead approach to modern jazz, he is by no means a reserved musical traditionalist. On the contrary, while he is adept at swinging acoustic jazz, one of his most formative experiences was as a member of vocalist Betty Carter's trio. A genre-bending maverick, Carter purportedly encouraged Chestnut to try new things and approach even the most well-known standard in an unexpected way. That expectation defying aesthetic fits nicely into Chestnut's work here with Williams and White, who come from a generation of jazz musicians who grew up playing electrified fusion, funk, and highly progressive post-bop influenced by the avant-garde. While the music here is more stripped down to the jazz essentials, they nonetheless tackle even the most well-known standard, like "It Could Happen to You," with a creative ebullience and in-the-moment spontaneity that grab your attention throughout. Also thrilling are the trio's takes on several original compositions, including Chestnut's sophisticated, minor-tinged "Faith Amongst the Unknown," White's languid, urbane ballad "Dedication," and Williams' soulful, roiling "Toku-Do."

Bobby Watson • Back Home In Kansas City
Saxophonist/Composer
Bobby Watson draws inspiration from the rich jazz heritage of his
Kansas City hometown on his spirited album Back Home in Kansas City. It
features an all-star quintet with trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, pianist Cyrus
Chestnut, bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Jones, with a guest
appearance by singer Carmen Lundy.
As the title suggests, Back
Home in Kansas City also pays homage to Watson’s hometown and its own
rich musical heritage. The saxophonist grew up in KC, leaving to study
at the University of Miami and then spending a quarter century making
his name in New York City. He returned home in 2000 to serve as Director
of Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s
Conservatory of Music & Dance, retiring 20 years later.
His
retirement coinciding with the pandemic, Watson found himself with
plenty of time to reflect on Kansas City’s importance to his distinctive
sound and, gradually, to play for local audiences who helped attune his
approach to the blend of soul and balladry that makes up this new
album.
Throughout Back Home in Kansas City, Watson’s gift for
telling stories with his saxophone is on vibrant display. “Being out
here in Kansas City has given me a chance to slow down and go deeper
into what I want to play,” he explains. “The Kansas City audience is a
sophisticated audience because of the history of this town. We’ve got
people out here who have heard a lot of music. So I’m not playing down
to the audience, and I’m not trying to simplify anything. I’m simply
coming out of what I feel in my heart and my soul.”

Home in Kansas City.
Carmen Lundy.
Como sugiere el título, Back Home in Kansas City

Cyrus Chestnut • My Father's Hands
The Baltimore-born Cyrus Chestnut is a wonderful pianist, rather like Oscar Peterson in his heyday: one of the rare kind who isn’t forever trying to impress you. He doesn’t need to try. Now in his late 50s, he has been playing since, as a small child, he watched his father’s hands “in a passionate relationship with the piano”. His father, McDonald, who played in Baptist churches and was his first teacher, died last year. This album is dedicated to his memory.
Among Chestnut’s many attractive points is his leaning towards melody. These 10 tracks are full of tunes, some composed by him, some already well known, and some that just turn up in the course of playing. His own pieces, especially Thinking About You and Working Out Just Fine, are really attractive, catchy numbers. Of the standards here, But Beautiful, although short, is exactly what its title suggests. Yesterday, very slow with lots of space, some gentle harmonic changes and a few tinkly phrases suggesting birdsong, is quite magical. This is the pianist’s show, of course, but in Peter Washington and Lewis Nash it has one of the best bass and drums teams anywhere.

Review
by Matt Collar
With the death of Cyrus Chestnut's 85-year-old father, McDonald Chestnut, in 2021, the pianist lost not only his most passionate supporter but the man who first taught him to play. A self-taught pianist and organist, the elder Chestnut played in church (along with his wife, a choir director). He introduced the younger Chestnut to classical piano, gospel, and traditional spirituals, setting Cyrus on the path to eventually become one of the most accomplished jazz musicians of his generation. With 2022's My Father's Hands, Chestnut pays tribute to his dad, crafting a heartfelt album that touches upon jazz and pop standards, Latin rhythms, and originals. Joining him are two of his longtime associates and esteemed contemporaries, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash. Together, they play with an intuitive warmth and camaraderie. As the album is an homage to his father's memory, one might expect it to be melancholy or sad. However, while there are certainly moments of tearful beauty, as on Chestnut's lyrical rendition of the ballad "But Beautiful," the record is never maudlin and finds him in a lively mood. This is especially true on the opening original "Nippon Soul Connection," a blues swinger in the '60s hard bop tradition. He also dives into Ray Bryant's Latin number "Cubano Chant" and subtly subverts expectations with his bossa nova take on the classic "There Will Never Be Another You." We also get a dusky and introspective reading of the Beatles' "Yesterday." His father's essence is perhaps best captured on "I Must Tell Jesus," a soulful hymn that Chestnut plays solo, infusing the measured gospel melody with warm chordal harmonies that shimmer with joy.

No necesita intentarlo.
Sus propias piezas, especialmente Thinking About You y Working Out Just Fine, son números realmente atractivos y pegadizos.

There Will Never Be Another You".

drummer Victor Lewis. For his second HighNote effort, 2016's Natural
Essence, the pianist was joined by the veteran rhythm section of bassist
Buster Williams and drummer Lenny White. Williams and White were also
on board for 2017's There's a Sweet Sweet Spirit, which also featured
vibraphonist Steve Nelson. Also that year, he paired with Charnett
Moffett on the bassist's Music from Our Soul. In 2018, Chestnut returned
with Kaleidoscope, a classical-influenced trio album featuring bassist
Eric Wheeler and drummer Chris Beck. Included on the album were jazz
reworkings of compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Claude Debussy,
Erik Satie, and more.

Biografía del artista por Matt Collar
Cyrus
Lovano, James Carter y Anita Baker.
el sello japonés M&I.
saxofonista, nominado al Grammy, Beautiful Life.

Roy Hargrove Quintet • With Tenors Of Our Time
Review
by Scott Yanow
Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has the opportunity of a lifetime on this recording, sharing separate songs with five great tenors: Johnny Griffin, Joe Henderson, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, and Stanley Turrentine. Everyone fares well, including Hargrove's group (Ron Blake on tenor and soprano, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson). The young trumpeter (who is vying for Lee Morgan's unoccupied chair) keeps up with the saxophonists on this generally relaxed affair; recommended for hard bop fans.
